Boeing Crosswind Technique

This video shows the Boeing factory determining the demonstrated crosswind landing limits on the 777 and the 747SP. The engineers make educated guesses, but then the test crews have to go and actually prove the numbers. They sneak off to Brazil to do these tests at a certain remote BAF airbase famous for its continual atrocious crosswinds.

On some landings it looks like the pilot is slipping or at least partially cross controlled. One would not have believed it possible, particularly the third and fourth landings. In the last landing, coming in virtually sideways, the pilot is using almost full rudder...just flapping the rudder back and forth like a flag to maintain control.....the landing was an almost unbelievable performance on such a huge ship. Enjoy!
